Made for TV Only

by Sherria

Last night when I returned home after a grueling 45 minute kickboxing session, I just wanted to kick back and relax and watch TV. Since I don’t really have a Monday night lineup, I decided to turn to TVOne where I knew I could find a wholesome African-American comedy show to help me relax and laugh. I was so happy when I saw Tatyana Ali’s gorgeous face on TV. Her new show, Love That Girl, produced by comedian, Martin Lawrence, has been a hit on the network. I’ve watched the show a few times and there are some funny punch lines. I love her younger brother, Latrell (played by Alphonso McAuley), who aspires to become a stand-up comedian. However, I just can’t get my head around Tyana Jones’ (played by Tatyana Ali) friend Imunique (played by Bresha Webb) who is also her assistant in the real estate office. I know that this show is a comedy and it’s meant for entertainment, but I can’t help but think that there maybe some young women new in their careers who watch this show and might start to believe that the outfits Imunique wears to work are somehow appropriate for the office. P.S. I wouldn’t even wear those clothes on my personal time. But I wont’ judge 😉 As I started to think about other comedy shows, I realize that most of the women in the workplace wear outfits that are provocative or too revealing, meanwhile the men are always dressed in suits and ties. I couldn’t help to think about one of my favorite characters, Maya, from Girlfriends. I love Maya, I swear I do. But, the leather skirts, cleavage revealing shirts, and lingerie blouses under a blazer just aren’t appropriate for a professional environment. That is, unless you work at a fashion house or lingerie store. So while we may get a kick out of our favorite girls on television, just know that the clothes they wear to the office are made for TV only.

TVOne’s Love that Girl

Imunique (to the right in purple). Tights, leotards, and belly chains are not appropriate. Honestly, I believe that Tatyana's skirt is a bit short for the office as well. The female to the left, wearing a maxi dress, works in a hair salon. So that's okay. But totally inappropriate for a conservative office.

Maya (third female to the left). I love her but sheer shirts are a "no-no" in the office, especially a law office. If you want to wear a shear shirt. Make sure you have a cotton shirt underneath and a blazer on top.
