Alternative Workouts

Since I hate going to the traditional gym, I recently started practicing kickboxing at a Martial Arts Center in Tribeca, NYC. The thought of being punched and kicked used to scare me, but not anymore. There’s something great about knowing that you are strong enough to withstand a hit. Developing fighting techniques has also been proven to boost coordination skills and enhance mental alertness. If you’re tired of the standard treadmills, elliptical machines and weightlifting offered by traditional gyms, try the alternatives below.

Alternatives to going to the gym:

Yoga: I tried Bikram Yoga last year and fell in love.  I almost fell on the floor as well! Be prepared to sweat with for 90 minutes. Bikram Yoga has 26 postures with each repeated twice. Take a bottle of water and your own yoga mat.

Pilates: You can either attend a class, purchase a DVD or my favorite, Blogilates on YouTube. I pretend that Cassey Ho is my personal pilates instructor. Do these exercises once a day for two weeks and you’ll definitely feel the difference.

Kickboxing: Pretend that you’re punching and kicking your enemies with this intense combination of martial arts and boxing workout. If you’d like to try it at home, I recommend Jillian Micheals’ “30-Day Shred.”

Zumba: If you’re a natural dancer then you’ll love Zumba. It fuses Latin, Reggae and Hip-Hop music for a high-intensity kick butt workout. Best of all, you’ll have fun dancing to your favorite tunes.
