Day to Night Glam with Mel B

by Sherria

Former Spice Girl, Melanie Brown, attended Gotham Hall in New York City last week for the Escape To Total Awards event and private concert. Noticeably thinner after giving birth in September, Melanie wore two glamourous gowns. The top portion of the cream gown resembles a sheath dress and the criss cross black dress worn on the red carpet was elegant and sleek. Inspired by both looks, I put together two sets that could be worn in the workplace as well as a night on the town.

In the Office:

I usually wear brightly colored jewelry with solid neutral colored dresses.

Ask A*cute: Can I be a tomboy at work?

by Jackie

Angela Asks:

My sister, Maronel, in her suit and tie.

“I’m a college student and am about to start a job as a personal assistant. I am a huge tom boy who hates to wear heels and finds mens’ professional attire to be more my style.  I know women can pull off the suit and tie look, like your sister. Do you think that look is too much for everyday in the office…for a woman? I still have my feminine side so I would like to make a suit and tie look cute. Advice please?”

Injecting your personality into your work wardrobe is a must. When Sherria and I style clients, we make sure to get a sense of their personal style: favorite colors, themes, and influences. You look your best when you are confident and you are confident when you are yourself.

There are ways to incorporate menswear into your everyday work look, and still be feminine. If you opt to wear a tie, head to or Ebay and get a deal on a skinny tie like this vintage Ralph Lauren recently sold on

I like to mix and match genres all of the time. One of my secrets is shopping the men’s accessories sections in stores. I love wearing rugged pieces with girly dresses. I guess it’s not a secret anymore.

You can also pull off this look by just adding oversized women’s accessories.

Essence Style Files: A*cute picks

This afternoon I started clicking through’s Fashion & Beauty section. The two style items below are what struck me the most. I love handbagas and shoes. They can really make or break an outfit; especially shoes! Being a young working girl that loves fashion can sometimes have its downsides, mainly because of my tight budget. However, no matter what your income is, you can still look stylish by finding items that “look” expensive but really aren’t. Below the style picks found on, I provided some inexpensive alternatives to each. Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think.

Gearing up for ‘snow-pocalypse’

by Sherria

Yesterday, Washington, DC saw a high of 37 degrees. It’s only early December so I can imagine what the rest of the winter has in store. Today I wore two scarves to work in order to bear the cold weather. Jackie suggested that I buy a parka, or some may call a puffy coat. She suggested I try Macy’s and I found a really cute Nine West jacket that I like (shown below). So, maybe I’ll pick up one before “snow-pocalypse” happens again. If you have a great winter coat, let me know where you bought it. Comments are welcome! Thanks people 🙂

Coat Options:

Nine West Down Puffer with Faux Fur Collar (Macy's, on sale for $79.99)

Belted Wool Coat (Victoria's Secret, on sale for $149)

Fall must-have ALERT!

The neutral tone convertible bag

BIG BUCKS: The Michael Kors Layton Satchel retails for nearly $400.

I’ve found the perfect fall bag! The only problem is, it is above my price point for a new purse (I own a lot of purses, so it’s more of a Want than a Need).   The large Layton Satchel by Michael Kors is a quintessential utility bag armed with a short- and long-strap option.  For a young working woman on the go, versatility is key.  Going from a cross-body style to handbag is optimal.  It is available in black and white, but the luggage color would provide more wardrobe flexibility.

small change: The The Nine West Plain Jane bag is currently at sale in Macy's for about $50.

Though I’d love to have the MK version, Nine West provides a more affordable option that’s just as convenient and similar in styling.  Unless I hit the lottery, I will most likely opt for the Nine West Plain Jane satchel.  It has the same versatility as and similar dimensions  to the Layton bag.
